Dunbar Heritage Association celebrates MLK Day

The Dunbar Heritage Association honored Martin Luther King Day with two days of activities: a Kids Event at the San Marcos Library on Jan. 17 as well as a wreath-laying ceremony, MLK Walk, and Celebration at the Hays County Historic Courthouse on MLK Day, Jan. 19. Following the gathering at the Courthouse, the San Marcos Police Department served breakfast tacos at the Dunbar Recreation Center.

DHA 2026 MLK Schedule of Events

The Wreath-laying Ceremony will begin at the LBJ/MLK Crossroads Memorial in San Marcos, TX, at 9:30 a.m. on January 19, 2026. All other times are approximate.

9:30 a.m. -Wreath-laying Ceremony at the Crossroads Memorial

10:15 a.m. -Silent march/walk to the Hays County Courthouse Square

11:00 a.m. -The MLK program and Celebration will take place immediately after the walk.

The keynote address will be delivered at the courthouse.

12:00 p.m. Reception at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 MLK Dr. Free food and drinks provided.

Celebrate Kwanzaa: A Guide to Holiday Traditions

Kwanzaa is a non-religious, cultural holiday that focuses on family, community, and culture created by Dr. Maulana Karenga. The celebration is modeled after the first harvest celebrations in Africa, and the meaning of the name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means the “first fruits” of the harvest. The annual celebration takes place from December 26 thru January 1.
