DHA Juneteenth 5K: Canceled

Important Community Announcement from the Dunbar Heritage Association
It is with deep disappointment that the Dunbar Heritage Association (DHA) announces the cancellation of the 2026 Juneteenth 5K Freedom Run scheduled for June 6, 2026, in San Marcos.
This decision was not made lightly. Due to racial threats and messages referencing violence and threats to “shoot up” the event, we cannot in good conscience move forward while any concern exists regarding the safety of our participants, volunteers, vendors, children, and community members.
We want to sincerely thank the San Marcos Police Department and Police Chief Stan Standridge, who personally expressed his support and even agreed to participate in the race alongside the community. We deeply appreciate the partnership, professionalism, and commitment shown by local law enforcement throughout this situation.
However, after careful consideration, DHA believes our highest responsibility is protecting the people we serve.
Juneteenth represents freedom, unity, resilience, and progress. While hate and intimidation will never silence the importance of our history or our mission, we must place community safety above all else.
We remain committed to continuing educational, cultural, and community-centered events that uplift and unite San Marcos and Hays County.
To everyone who registered, sponsored, donated, volunteered, or supported this event — especially our partners at H-E-B — thank you for standing with us.
We ask the community to continue choosing unity over division, peace over fear, and love over hate.
We’re Not Defeated, We are vigilant
